ABADDON , a See also:Hebrew word meaning " destruction." In See also:poetry it comes to mean "See also:place of destruction," and so the under-See also:world or Sheol (cf . See also:Job See also:xxvi . 6 ; Prov. xv . II) . In Rev. ix . 11 Abaddon ('A 3a.b& v) is used of See also:hell personified, the See also:prince of the underworld . The See also:term is here explained as See also:Apollyon (q.v.), the " destroyer." W . Baudissin (See also:Herzog-Hauck, Realencyklopadie) notes that Hades and Abaddon in Rabbinic writings are employed as See also:personal names, just as shemayya in See also:Dan. iv . 23, shamayim (" See also:heaven "), and mdkOm (" place ") among the Rabbins, are used of See also:God . |
