ACUNA (1597-c. 1676)  , See also:Spanish missionary and explorer, was See also:born at See also:Burgos in 1597 . He was admitted a Jesuit in 1612, and afterwards sent on See also:mission See also:work to See also:Chile and See also:Peru, where he became See also:rector of the See also:college of See also:Cuenca . In 1639 he accompanied Pedro Texiera in his second exploration of the See also:Amazon, in See also:order to take scientific observations, and draw up a See also:report for the Spanish See also:government . The See also:journey lasted ten months; and on the explorer's arrival in Peru, See also:Acuna pre-pared his narrative, while awaiting a See also:ship for See also:Europe . The See also:king of See also:Spain, See also:Philip IV., received the author coldly, and it is said even tried to suppress his See also:book, fearing that the Portuguese, who had just revolted from Spain (164o), would profit by its See also:information . After occupying the positions of See also:procurator of the See also:Jesuits at See also:Rome and See also:censor (calificador) of the See also:Inquisition at See also:Madrid, Acuna returned to See also:South See also:America, where he died, probably soon after 1675 . His Nuevo Descubrimiento del Gran Rio de See also:las See also:Amazonas was published at Madrid in 1641; See also:French and See also:English See also:translations (the latter from the French, appeared in 1682 and 1698 .
