In 1645 he had risen to the See also:rank of See also:captain; and after sharing in various victories as commander of a See also:squadron, he achieved his most brilliant success at the See also:Dardanelles, on the 13th of May 1654, when, with his own See also:vessel alone, he See also:broke through the See also:line of See also:Turkish galleys, sank fifteen of them, and burned others, causing a loss to the enemy of 5000 men .. The following See also:day he entered Tenedos, and compelled the See also:complete surrender of the See also:Turks . On returning to See also:Venice he was crowned with honours, and became See also:admiral-See also:lieutenant in 166o . Numerous tempting offers were made to him by other naval See also:powers, and in 1661 he See also:left Venice to return to the See also:Netherlands . Next See also:year he was induced, by the offer of a See also:title and an enormous See also:salary, to accept the command of the Danish fleet from See also:Frederick III . Under See also:Christian V. he took the command of the combined Danish fleets against See also:Sweden, but died suddenly on the 5th of See also:November 1675 at See also:Copenhagen, before the expedition set out . When in the Venetian service, See also:Adelaer was known by the name of Curzio Suffrido Adelborst (i.e . Dutch for " naval cadet ") .
