ANDROCLUS , a See also:Roman slave who lived about the See also:time of Tiberius . He is the See also:hero of a See also:story told by Aulus See also:Gellius (v . 14), which states that Androclus had taken See also:refuge from the cruelties of his See also:master in a See also:cave in See also:Africa, when a See also:lion entered the cave and showed him his swollen paw, from which Androclus extracted a large See also:thorn . The grateful See also:animal subsequently recognized him when he had been captured and thrown to the See also:wild beasts in the See also:circus, and, instead of attacking him, began to caress him (See also:Aelian, De Nat . An. vii . 48) . |
