It has its modem name, signifying "See also:land of the See also:Arabs," from the Arabs who See also:form the bulk of the See also:population, and is subdivided into the districts of See also:Muhamrah, Fellahiyeh (the old Dorak), See also:Ram See also:Hormuz (popularly known as Ramiz), Havizeh, See also:Shushter and See also:Dizful . It has a population of about 200,000 and pays a yearly See also:revenue of about £30,000 . The See also:soil is very fertile, but since the See also:dam over the See also:Karun at See also:Ahvaz was swept away and the numerous canals which diverted the See also:waters of the See also:river for See also:irrigation became useless, a See also:great See also:part of the province is uncultivated, and most of the crops and produce depend for See also:water on rainfall and See also:wells . The See also:climate is hot, and in the See also:low-lying, swampy districts very unhealthy; the prevailing winds are See also:north-See also:west and See also:south-See also:east, the former hot and dry from the arid districts west of See also:Mesopotamia, the latter bearing much moisture from the Persian Gulf and the See also:Indian Ocean . The See also:principal Arab tribes are the Kab (generally known as Chaab) and Beni Lam, the former mostly settled in towns and villages and by See also:religion Shi'ites, the latter nomads and See also:Sunnites . The staples of See also:food are See also:dates and See also:fish in the south, elsewhere the produce of the herds and flocks and See also:rice, See also:wheat and See also:barley . Other products are See also:maize, See also:cotton, See also:silk and See also:indigo, and the manufactures include carpets without See also:pile, coarse woollens, cottons and silk nettings . See also:Dyeing is extensively carried on in Dizful where most of the indigo is grown . Khuzistan (meaning " the land of the Khuz ") was a part of the Biblical See also:Elam; the classical Susiana, and appears in the great inscription of See also:Darius as Uvaja .
