GULF OF See also:

ARTA (anc. Sinus Ambracius)  , an inlet of the Ionian See also:Sea, 25 M. See also:long and ro broad, most of the See also:northern shores of which belong to See also:Turkey, the See also:southern and eastern to See also:Greece . Its only important affluent, besides the See also:Arta, is the Luro (anc . Chandra), also from the See also:north . The gulf abounds with mullets, soles and eels . Around its shores are numerous ruins of See also:ancient cities: See also:Actium at the entrance, where the famous See also:battle was fought in 31 B.c.; See also:Nicopolis, See also:Argos, Limnaea and Olpae; and several flourishing towns, such as See also:Preveza, Arta (anc . See also:Ambracia), Karavasara or Karbasaras, and Vonitza . The See also:river ARTA (anc . Arachthus or Aratthus, in See also:Livy xxxviii . 3, Aretho) is the See also:chief river of See also:Epirus, and is said to have been navigable in ancient times as far as Ambracia . Below this See also:town it flows through a marshy See also:plain, consisting mainly of its own See also:alluvium; its upper course is through the territory of the Molossians; its See also:total length is about 8o m .
