ARTA (Narda, i.e. iv "Ap&a, or Zarta, i,e. eis "Apra)  , a See also:town of See also:Greece, in the See also:province of See also:Arta, S9 M . N.N.W. of Mesolonghi . Pop. about 7000 . It is built on the site of the See also:ancient See also:Ambracia (q.v.), its See also:present designation being derived from a corruption of the name of the See also:river Arachthus (Arta) on which it stands . This enters the Gulf of Arta some distance See also:south of the town . The river forms the frontier between Greece and See also:Turkey, and is crossed by a picturesque See also:bridge, which is neutral ground . There are a few remains of old cyclopean walls . The town contains also a See also:Byzantine See also:castle, built on the lofty site of the ancient citadel; a See also:palace belonging to the See also:Greek See also:metropolitan; a number of mosques, synagogues and churches, the most remarkable being the See also:church of the Virgin of See also:Consolation, founded in 819 . The streets of the town were widened and improved in 1869 . Manufacture of woollens, cottons, See also:Russia See also:leather and See also:embroidery is carried on, and there is See also:trade in See also:cattle, See also:wine, See also:tobacco, See also:hemp, hides and See also:grain . Much of the neighbouring See also:plain is very fertile, and the town is surrounded with gardens and orchards, in which See also:orange, See also:lemon and citron come to See also:great perfection . In 1083 Arta was taken by See also:Bohemund of See also:Tarentum; in 1449 by the See also:Turks; in 1688 by the Venetians .

In 1797 it was held by the See also:

French, but in the following See also:year, 17.98, All See also:Pasha of See also:Iannina captured it . During the Greek See also:War of See also:Independence it suffered severely, and was the See also:scene of several conflicts, in which the ultimate success was with the Turks . An insurrection in 1854 was at once repressed . It was ceded to Greece in 1881 . In the See also:Greco-See also:Turkish War of 1897 the Greeks gained some temporary successes at Arta during See also:April and May .
