AUK, a name commonly given to several species of sea-fowl. A special interest attaches to the great auk (Alta impennis), owing to its recent extinction and the value of its eggs to collectors. (See GAREFOWL; also GUILLEMOT, PUFFIN, RAZOR-BILL.)
