AVERRUNCATOR , a See also: form of long See also: shears used in See also: arboriculture for•"averruncating" or pruning off the higher branches of trees, &c
.
The word " averruncate " (from See also: Lat. averruncare, to See also: ward off, remove
See also: mischief) glided into meaning to " See also: weed the ground," " prune vines," &c., by a supposed derivation from the Lat. ab, off, and eruncare, to weed out, and it was spelt " aberuncate " to suit this ; but the New See also: English See also: Dictionary regards such a derivation as impossible
.
