In 1865 he wag one of the representatives of the Chilean See also: government at the general See also: South See also: American congress at See also: Lima, and after his return obtained See also: great distinction as an orator in the See also: national See also: assembly
.
After discharging some See also: diplomatic See also: missions abroad, he became successively See also: minister of See also: foreign affairs and of the interior under the See also: presidency of Senor See also: Santa Maria, and in the latter capacity carried compulsory See also: civil See also: marriage and several other See also: laws highly obnoxious to the See also: clergy
.
In 1886 he was elected president; but, in spite of his great capacity, his imperious temper little fitted him for the See also: post
.
He was soon irreconcilably at variance with the majority of the national representatives, and on the 1st of See also: January 1891 he sought to terminate an intolerable situation by refusing to convoke the assembly and ordering the continued collection of the taxes on his own authority
.
This led to the Chilean Civil War of 1891, which ended in the overthrow of See also: Balmaceda, who committed suicide on the 18th of See also: September, the anniversary of his See also: elevation to the presidency
