BARISAL  , a See also:

town of See also:British See also:India, headquarters of See also:Backergunje See also:district in Eastern See also:Bengal and See also:Assam, situated on a See also:river of the same name . Pop . (1901) 18,978 . It is an important centre of river See also:trade, on the steamer route through the See also:Sundarbans from See also:Calcutta to the See also:Brahmaputra . It contains a first grade See also:college and several See also:schools . There are a public librany, established by subscription in 1858; and a students' See also:union, for helping the sick and poor and promoting the intellectual and See also:physical improvement of boys . Barisal has given its name to a curious physical phenomenon, known as the " Barisal guns," the cause of which has not been satisfactorily explained . These are noises, like the See also:report of See also:cannon, frequently heard in the channels of the See also:delta of the Brahmaputra, at the rising of the See also:tide .

I read the book, "Not of This World" by Peter Kolosimo, for the second time, and came across a chapter about the cannons of Barisal I thought that I would inquire about them. If anyone has more information I would enjoy reading about it.
