In 1725, under the auspices of the Russian See also:government, he went overland to See also:Okhotsk, crossed to Kamchatka, and built the See also:ship " See also:Gabriel." In her he pushed northward in 1728, until he could no longer observe any See also:extension of the See also:land to the north, or its See also:appearance to the See also:east . In the following See also:year he made an abortive See also:search for land eastward, and in 1730 returned to St See also:Petersburg . He was subsequently commissioned to a further expedition, and in 1740 established the See also:settlement of Petropavlosk in Kamchatka; and built two vessels, the " St Peter " and " St See also:Paul," in which in 1741 he led an expedition towards See also:America . A See also:storm separated the See also:ships, but Bering sighted the See also:southern coast of See also:Alaska, and a landing was made at See also:Kayak See also:Island or in the vicinity . Bering was forced by adverse conditions to return quickly, and discovered some of the Aleutian Islands on his way back . He was afflicted with See also:scurvy, and became too See also:ill to command his ships, which were at last driven to See also:refuge on an uninhabited island in the See also:south-See also:west of Bering See also:Sea, where Bering himself and many of his See also:company died . This island bears his name . Bering died on the 19th of See also:December 1741 . It was See also:long before the value of his See also:work was recognized; but See also:Captain See also:Cook was able to prove his accuracy as an observer .
