He was educated at See also:Queen's See also:College, See also:Oxford, was ordained in the See also:Church of See also:England in 1837, and became See also:chaplain to a central See also:London workhouse . In 1839 he was appointed lecturer in classical literature at See also:King's College, London, and in 1855 he became See also:professor of English See also:language and literature and lecturer in See also:modern See also:history, succeeding F . D . See also:Maurice . Meanwhile from 1854 onwards he was also engaged in journalistic See also:work on the See also:Morning See also:Herald, Morning See also:Post and See also:Standard . In 1856 he was commissioned by the See also:master of the rolls to prepare a See also:calendar of the See also:state papers of See also:Henry VIII., a work demanding a vast amount of See also:research . He was also made reader at the Rolls, and subsequently preacher . In 1877 Disraeli secured for him the See also:crown living of Toppesfield, See also:Essex . There he had See also:time to continue his task of preparing his Letters and Papers of the Reign of King Henry VIII., the Introductions to which (published separately, under the See also:title The Reign of Henry VIII., in 1884) See also:form a scholarly and authoritative history of Henry VIII.'s reign . New See also:editions of several standard See also:historical See also:works were also produced under See also:Brewer's direction . He died at Toppesfield in See also:February 1879 .
