He was educated at Ballitore, in See also:Ireland, where See also:Edmund See also:Burke was one of his schoolfellows, studied See also:medicine at See also:Edinburgh, and finally graduated at See also:Leiden in 1745 . Appointed physician to the See also:army in 1758, he served in See also:Germany during See also:part of the Seven Years' See also:War, and on his return settled down to practise in See also:London . In 1764 he published Economical and Medical Observations, which contained suggestions for improving the See also:hygiene of army hospitals . In his latter years he withdrew altogether into private See also:life . The circle of his See also:friends included some of the most distinguished See also:literary men of the See also:age . He was warmly attached to Dr See also:Johnson, to whom about 1784 he offered an See also:annuity of £See also:loo for life, and whom he attended on his See also:death-See also:bed, while in 1788 he presented Burke, of whom he was an intimate friend, with See also:i000, and offered to repeat the See also:gift " every See also:year until your merit is rewarded as it ought to be at See also:court." He died on the 11th of See also:December 1797, leaving his See also:house and part of his See also:fortune to his See also:grand-See also:nephew, Dr See also:Thomas See also:Young .
