fine view of the Apennines . It belonged to the countess Matilda of Tuscany (d . 1115), and is famous as the scene of the penance performed by the emperor Henry IV. before Pope Gregory VII. in 1077 . The castle was destroyed by the inhabitants of Reggio in 1255 .
