CANTAGALLO  , an inland See also:

town of the See also:state of Rio de Janeiro, See also:Brazil, about See also:loo m. by See also:rail N.E. of the See also:port of Rio de Janeiro, with which it is connected by the Cantagallo railway . Pop . (189o) of the See also:municipality, 26,067, of whom less than one-See also:fourth live in the town . Cantagallo is situated in the fertile See also:Parahyba valley and is the commercial centre of a See also:rich See also:coffee-producing See also:district . There are exhausted See also:gold placer mines in its vicinity, but they were not rich enough to cause any considerable development in See also:mining . Coffee See also:production is the See also:principal See also:industry, but See also:sugar-See also:cane is grown to a limited extent, and some See also:attention is given to the raising of See also:cattle and See also:swine . The district is an excellent See also:fruit region .
