He at first supported the opposition to See also:Charles's arbitrary See also:government, but soon allied himself with the See also:king's cause, on which See also:side his sympathies were engaged, and was raised to the See also:peerage by the See also:title of See also:Baron Capel of Hadham on the 6th of See also:August 1641 . On the outbreak of the See also:war he was appointed See also:lieutenant-See also:general of See also:Shropshire, See also:Cheshire and See also:North See also:Wales, where he rendered useful military services, and later was made one of the See also:prince of Wales's councillors, and a See also:commissioner at the negotiations at See also:Uxbridge in 1645 . He attended the See also:queen in her See also:flight to See also:France in 1646, but disapproved of the prince's See also:journey thither, and retired to See also:Jersey, subsequently aiding in the king's See also:escape to the Isle of See also:Wight . He was one of the See also:chief leaders in the second See also:Civil War, but met with no success, and on the 27th of August, together with See also:Lord See also:Norwich, he surrendered to See also:Fairfax at See also:Colchester on promise of See also:quarter for See also:life.' This assurance, however, was after-wards interpreted as not binding the civil authorities, and his See also:fate for some See also:time hung in the See also:balance . He succeeded in escaping from the See also:Tower, but was again captured, was condemned to See also:death by the new " high See also:court of See also:justice " on the 8th of See also:March 1649, and was beheaded together with the See also:duke of See also:Hamilton and Lord See also:Holland the next See also:day . He married See also:Elizabeth, daughter and See also:heir of Sir Charles See also:Morrison of Cassiobury, Hertfordshire, through whom that See also:estate passed into his See also:family, and by whom besides four daughters he had five sons, the eldest See also:Arthur being created See also:earl of Essex at the Restoration . Lord Capel, who was much beloved, and who was a See also:man of deep religious feeling and exemplary life, wrote Daily Observations or Meditations: Divine, Morall, published with some of his letters in 1654, and reprinted, with a short life of the author, under the title Excellent Contemplations, in 1683 .
