COHEN (Hebrew for " priest "), a Jewish family name, implying descent from the ancient Hebrew priests. Many families claiming such descent are, however, not named Cohen. Other forms of the name are Cohn, Cowen, Kahn. See J. Jacobs, Jewish Encyclopedia, iv. 144.
