After considerable experience as an engineer in the See also:west of See also:England he came to See also:London, and from 1844–1847 had a consulting practice in See also:Westminster . In the latter See also:year he was appointed See also:resident engineer in See also:charge of the extensive See also:national See also:harbour See also:works at See also:Portland then in progress . In 1856 he was appointed engineer-in-See also:chief of this undertaking, and this See also:post he retained till the completion of the works in 1872 . His services at Portland were rewarded with a See also:knighthood . He was now recognized as the leading authority on harbour construction, and his See also:advice was sought by many of the colonial governments, especially by those of See also:South See also:Africa and See also:Australia, and by the See also:Indian See also:government . After the Portland harbour his best-known See also:work is the harbour of See also:Colombo, See also:Ceylon . He was made a K.C.M.G. in 1886 . From 1884 till his See also:death he was a member of the See also:Suez See also:Canal See also:Commission, and' from 1889–1891 See also:president of the Institution of See also:Civil See also:Engineers . He died at See also:Brighton on the 2nd of See also:March 1892 .
