He was educated at the Ecole Centrale as a See also:civil engineer, the See also:family See also:wealth being derived from smelting See also:works . He began his See also:literary career with two novels, L'Ete See also:des fruits secs (1885) and Le Sauvetage du See also:grand duc (1889) . In 1891 three pieces were accepted by the See also:Theatre Libre . The See also:list of his plays includes L'Envers d'une sainte (1892); See also:Les Fossiles (1892), a picture of the prejudices of the provincial See also:nobility; L'Invitee (1893), the See also:story of a See also:mother who returns to her See also:children after twenty years' separation; L'Amour brode (1893), which was withdrawn by the author from the Theatre See also:Francais after the second See also:representation; La Figurante (1896); Le Repas du See also:lion (1898), dealing with the relations between See also:capital and labour; La Fille sauvage (1902), the See also:history of the development of the religious See also:idea; La Nouvelle Idole (1899), dealing with the See also:worship.of See also:science; and Le Coup d'aile (1906) .
