Knightstown

39º47N 85º31W, pop (2000e) 2100.Town in Henry Co, Indiana, USA; located on the Big Blue R, E of Indianapolis; first settled c.1819, and named for surveyor Jonathan Knight; incorporated as a town, 1837; former industries include grist, woollen, planing, flax, saw, and paper mills; birthplace of Charles A Beard; electric railway laid in 1905; retains many 19th-c and early 20th-c buildings; much of the town is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the academy (1876–7) in use until 1986; scenic railway crosses over the Big Blue R.
