Volga, River (ancient Rha)

Longest river of Europe, in C European Russia; rises in the Valdai Hills, and flows generally SE to enter the Caspian Sea, forming a broad delta below Astrakhan; length, 3531 km/2194 mi; principal navigable waterway in Russia; linked by canal to the Baltic, White Sea, Sea of Azov, and Black Sea; many reservoirs on its course; important source of hydroelectric power and irrigation.
