Cliff Dwellings

Houses of the Pueblo Indians in SW USA from the Pueblo III cultural period (AD c.1100–1300). Made with stone blocks and adobe mortar, some were several storeys high, and built in arched recesses of cliff walls. They were deserted by 1300, when people moved further S and established pueblo villages, where they still live. Some cliff dwellings are preserved, such as Cliff Palace at Mesa Verde, Colorado.
