The name for many species of Centaurea, mostly perennials; characterized by the hard, rounded flower-heads surrounded by many closely overlapping bracts which often terminate in a fringed papery border with comb-like teeth; florets purple or yellow. (Genus: Centaurea. Family: Compositae.)
