Clergy Reserves

A seventh of the public land in Upper and Lower Canada (Ontario and Quebec), set aside for the future use of Protestant clergy; established under the Constitutional Act (1791). In practice the Reserves became bastions of wealth and power for the predominantly Anglican elite in Upper Canada, drawing fierce criticism from Methodists and disestablishmentarians. They were secularized in 1854.
