Viscount Stratford (de Redcliffe), Stratford Canning Biography (1786–1880)

Diplomat, born in London, UK, a cousin of George Canning. He studied at Cambridge, and became chargé d'affaires and de facto ambassador at Constantinople (1810–12), minister to Switzerland (1814–18), and minister to the USA (1820–3). As ambassador in Constantinople at various times between 1825 and 1851, he influenced Turkish policy, worked for Greek independence, and encouraged a programme of reforms, but was unsuccessful in his attempts to prevent the outbreak of the Crimean War (1854–6).
