Clifford Holland Biography (1883–1924)

Civil engineer, born in Somerset, Massachusetts, USA. He studied at Harvard (1906 BS), and became the tunnel engineer (1914–16) and the division engineer (1916–19) for the Public Service Commission. As chief engineer (1919–24) for the New York State and New Jersey Interstate Bridge and Tunnel Commissions, he planned and built the first twin-tube, subaqueous vehicular tunnel, crossing under the Hudson R between lower Manhattan and New Jersey. It was named for him in 1924 and opened in 1927.
