City in SW Russia, on the R Podkumok in the Caucasus foothills SW of Pyatigorsk; birthplace of Arthur Adamov and Alexander Solzhenitsyn; founded (1803) as a spa, now a famous health resort with mineral springs, sanitoriums and rest homes; its mineral water is bottled and sold throughout Russia.
