Vitalism

The doctrine that the difference between living organisms and inanimate bodies cannot be fully explained solely in material or physico-chemical terms. Organisms have additional, non-material, vital elements, which may or may not be capable of existing apart from their hosts. Bergson and Driesch were two of the best-known exponents.
