A family of small to medium-sized carnivores native to the S Old World; 72 species; long thin body, long tail, pointed muzzle, short legs; coat often spotted or banded; most secrete pungent fluid from glands near tail; inhabit woodland or dense undergrowth; eat small vertebrates, invertebrates, eggs, fruit, carrion.
