Viscount Templewood Of Chelsea (from 1944) Hoare, Sir Samuel (John Gurney) Biography (1880–1959)
British statesman, born in London, UK. He studied at Oxford, entered politics in 1905, and became Conservative MP for Chelsea (1910–44). He was secretary of state for air (1922–9), and as secretary of state for India (1931–5) piloted the India Act through the Commons, despite the opposition of Winston Churchill. In 1935, as foreign secretary, he resigned after criticism of his part in the discussions which led to the abortive Hoare–Laval pact over the Italian invasion of Ethiopia.
