Kirchenstaat

An area formerly under papal rule in C and S Italy from 754 (Pippinische Schenkung) until its integration into the kingdom of Italy in 1870. The Lateran Treaty of 1929 between the Italian fascist state and the papacy recognized the sovereignty of the Vatican City.
