Cleon Biography (?–422 BC)

The first Athenian of rich, bourgeois stock to play a prominent role in 5th-c BC politics. Routinely dismissed as an upstart, demagogue, and warmonger, it was his capture of the Spartans on the island of Sphacteria (425 BC) that gave Athens her trump card in the peace negotiations of the late 420s BC.
