Knyaz (Prince) Kutuzov, Mikhail Ilarionovich Biography (1745–1813)

Russian field marshal, born in St Petersburg, NW Russia. He distinguished himself in the Turkish wars, and in 1805 commanded against the French, but was defeated at Austerlitz. In 1812, as commander-in-chief, he fought Napoleon obstinately at Borodino, and later obtained a major victory over Davout and Ney at Smolensk.
