Klauwaerts Or Clauwaerts

(c.1300) A Flemish party supporting Guy of Dampierre, Count of Flanders, against Philip IV (the Fair) of France, named after the claws of the Flemish lion on the count's arms. Its strength was based on the Flemish nobility, the cities, and the trade guilds, as opposed to the French party, the Leliaerts (called after the French lily), who were supported more by the urban patricians. The Klauwaerts were excluded from most town magistracies after the annexation of Flanders by France, but returned to power after the Battle of the Golden Spurs.
