Klaus Von Klitzing Biography (1943– )

Physicist, born in Sroda, WC Poland (formerly Schroda, Germany). He studied at Brunswick and Würzburg, became professor at Munich in 1980, and in 1985 was appointed director of the Max Planck Institute, Stuttgart. In 1977 he presented a paper on two-dimensional electronic behaviour in which the quantum Hall effect was clearly seen, but few realized its significance, and it was not until 1980 that he came to appreciate what had occurred. He was awarded the 1985 Nobel Prize for Physics.
