Vittorio Sereni Biography (1913–83)

Poet, born in Luino, Lombardy, NW Italy. Influenced by hermetism at the beginning of his career, as in Frontiera (1941), he detached himself in his later work. Diario d'Algeria (1947) was born out of his experiences in World War 2. The poetry collections that followed, Gli strumenti umani (1965) and Stella variabile (1981), showed a new civil and moral commitment expressed in stark language. He also wrote short stories, including L'opzione (1964), essays, and was a fine translator of French and English poetry.
