Climax Vegetation
A botanical term for the final stage of plant succession which has developed without disturbance. Where climate is the major factor in determining vegetation, a climatic climax results. In most regions of the Earth, the climatic climax is dominated by trees: tropical rainforest in the humid tropics; deciduous woodland at temperate latitudes. Acceptance of the concept is not universal, and factors other than climate (eg soil type) may be important.
