Kivu, Lake

area 4750 km²/1800 sq mi. Lake in EC Africa; highest lake in the Albertine Rift, on the frontier between Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda; length, c.95 km/60 mi; width, 50 km/30 mi; altitude, 1460 m/4790 ft; drains into L Tanganyika via the Ruzizi R; contains Idiwi I (S); European discovery by German explorer Count von Gotzen.
