DEFENDER OF THE FAITH (Fidei Defensor)  , a See also:

title belonging to the See also:sovereign of See also:England in the same way as Christianissimus belonged to the See also:king of See also:France, and Catholicus belongs to the ruler of See also:Spain . It seems to have been suggested in 1516, and although certain charters have been appealed to in See also:proof of an earlier use of the title, it was first conferred by See also:Pope See also:Leo X. on See also:Henry VIII . The See also:Bull granting the title is dated the 11th of See also:October 1521, and was a See also:reward for the king's See also:treatise, Assertio, septem sacramentorum, against See also:Luther . When Henry See also:broke with the papacy, Pope See also:Paul III. deprived him of this designation, but in 1544 the title of " Defender of the Faith " was confirmed to Henry by See also:parliament, and has since been used by all his successors on the See also:English See also:throne .
