DUET (an See also:adaptation of the Ital. duetto, from See also:Lat. duo, two)  , a See also:term in See also:music for a See also:composition for two performers, both either vocal or instrumental . The term is not properly applied to a composition for one See also:voice and one See also:instrument, the latter being regarded as an See also:accompaniment, though in the See also:modern See also:evolution of this latter See also:form of composition it often has the same See also:character . Both parts must be of equal importance; if one is subordinated to the other it becomes an accompaniment and the See also:work ceases to be a See also:duet . Instrumental duets are written either for two different See also:instruments, such as See also:Mozart's duets for See also:violin and piano, or for two similar instruments .
