He entered the Ecole Polytechnique in 1835, and in 1842 was sent to See also:England to study and See also:report on See also:iron See also:ship-See also:building . Acting on his report, which was published in 1844, the See also:government built their first iron vessels under his supervision . He planned and built the See also:steam See also:line-of-See also:battle ship " See also:Napoleon " (1848-1852), and devised the method of altering sailing See also:ships of the line into steamers, which was afterwards extensively practised in both See also:France and England . He also showed the practicability of armouring the sides of a ship, and the See also:frigate " Gloire " gave a very clear demonstration of his views . It was the beginning of the See also:great See also:change in the construction of ships of See also:war which has been going on ever since . In 1857 See also:Dupuy de Lome was appointed " chef de la direction du materiel," at See also:Paris; and in 1861, " inspecteur See also:general du materiel de la marine." In 1866 he was elected a member of the See also:Academy of Sciences . At the beginning of the Franco-See also:German War he was appointed a member of the See also:committee of See also:defence, and during the See also:siege of Paris occupied himself with planning a See also:steer-able See also:balloon, for carrying out which he was given a See also:credit of 40,000 fr.; but the balloon was not ready till a few days before the See also:capitulation . The experiments that wereafterwardsmadewith it did not prove entirely satisfactory . In 1875 he was busy over a See also:scheme for embarking a railway See also:train at See also:Calais, and exhibited plans of the improved See also:harbour and See also:models of the " bateaux See also:porte-trains " to the Academy of Sciences in See also:July . In 1877 he was elected a senator for See also:life . He received the See also:cross of the See also:Legion of See also:Honour in 1845, was made a See also:commander in 1858, and See also:grand officer in See also:December 1863 .

He died at Paris on the 1st of See also:

February 1885 .
