In 1853 he went into business, first at See also:Pontypridd and then at Merthyr, but next See also:year made his way to See also:Liverpool

He decided to enter the See also:ministry, and studied arts and See also:theology respectively at the Normal See also:College, See also:Swansea, and the Memorial College, See also:Brecon, his convictions being deepened by the religious revival of 1858–1859
