As a boy he saw something of the " Rebecca Riots," and went to school at the neighbouring See also:village bf Llechryd . In 1853 he went into business, first at See also:Pontypridd and then at Merthyr, but next See also:year made his way to See also:Liverpool . He decided to enter the See also:ministry, and studied arts and See also:theology respectively at the Normal See also:College, See also:Swansea, and the Memorial College, See also:Brecon, his convictions being deepened by the religious revival of 1858–1859 . In 1862 he succeeded See also:Thomas See also:Jones as See also:minister of the Congregational See also:church at Morriston near Swansea . In 1865 he became pastor of See also:Salem church, See also:Carnarvon, a See also:charge which he occupied for nearly See also:thirty years despite many invitations to See also:English pastorates.- In 1894 he became See also:principal of the Congregational college at See also:Bangor . He died on the 3oth of See also:December 1896 . He was chairman of the Welsh Congregational See also:Union in 1886 and of the Congregational Union of See also:England and See also:Wales in 1892; and by his See also:earnest ministry, his eloquence and his See also:literary See also:work, especially in the ,denominational See also:paper Y Dysgedydd, he achieved a position of See also:great See also:influence in his See also:country . See See also:Life by H . Elvet See also:Lewis .
