Kunduz, and the inhabitants removed to Kunduz . But since Badakshan was annexed by Abdur Rahman, the town has recovered its former importance, and is now a considerable place of trade . It is the chief cantonment for eastern Afghanistan and the Pamir region, and is protected by a fort built in 1904 .
