Entering the university of See also: Erlangen in 1843, he soon began to devote his See also: attention to the See also: history of the German. language and literature, and in 1848 went to See also: Munich, where he remained five years,. and diligently availed himself of the use of the See also: government library for the purpose of prosecuting his See also: historical studies
.
In 1856 he was appointed secretary of the German museum at See also: Nuremberg, and in 1859 keeper of the See also: manuscripts
.
With the aid of the See also: manuscript collections in the museum he now turned his attention chiefly to See also: political history, and, with Johann H
.
See also: Muller, established an historical journal under the name of Zeitschrift fur deutsche Kulturgeschichte (4 vols., Nuremberg, 1856-r859)
.
To this journal he contributed a history of German
See also: taxation and commerce
.
On the latter subject he published separately Geschichte See also: des deutschen Hardels (2 vols., See also: Leipzig, 1859-r86o) and Die Hansa als deutsche See-und Handelsmacht (Berlin, 1862)
.
In 1862 he was appointed secretary of the See also: state archives at See also: Dresden, and, a little later, keeper
.
He there began the study of Saxon history, still devoting his attention chiefly to the history of commerce and See also: economy, and published Die Geschichte des Kurfiirsten See also: August von Sachsen in volkswirthschaftlicher Beziehung (Leipzig, 1868) and Geschichte des deutschen Zollwesens (Leipzig, 1869)
.
He died at Dresden on the 2nd of See also: March 1876
.
