He was returned to See also:parliament for See also:Canterbury in 1614, and became See also:recorder of the same See also:place in 1617 . Having attracted the See also:notice of See also:Charles I., who visited Canterbury in 1625, and was received with an address by Finch in his capacity as recorder, he was the following See also:year appointed See also:king's counsel and See also:attorney-See also:general to the See also:queen and was knighted . In 1628 he was elected See also:speaker of the See also:House of See also:Commons, a See also:post which he retained till its See also:dissolution in 1629 . He was the speaker who was held down in his See also:chair by See also:Holles and others on the occasion of Sir John See also:Eliot's See also:resolution on See also:tonnage and poundage . In 1634 he was appointed See also:chief See also:justice of the See also:court of See also:common pleas, and distinguished himself by the active zeal with which he upheld the king's See also:prerogative . Notable also was the brutality which characterized his conduct as chiefjustice, particularly in the cases of See also:William See also:Prynne and John See also:Langton . He presided over the trial of John See also:Hampden, who resisted the See also:payment of See also:ship-See also:money, and he was chiefly responsible for the decision of the See also:judges that ship-money was constitutional . As a See also:reward for his services he was, in 164o, appointed See also:lord keeper, and was also created See also:Baron Finch of Fordwich . He had, however, become so unpopular that one of the first acts of the See also:Long Parliament, which met in the same year was his See also:impeachment . He took See also:refuge in See also:Holland, but had to suffer the See also:sequestration of his estates . When he was allowed to return to See also:England is uncertain, but in 166o he was one of the commissioners for the trial of the regicides, though he does not appear to have taken much See also:part in the proceedings .

He died on the 27th of See also:
