After a brilliant university career at the university of Brunswick, at See also:Edinburgh and See also:Heidelberg, he returned to See also:Canada and taught in various See also:local See also:schools, eventually becoming See also:professor of See also:classics andhistory in the local university . In 1882 he became Conservative member for See also:King's See also:County, N.B., in the Dominion See also:parliament, and in 1885 entered the See also:cabinet of See also:Sir See also:John See also:Macdonald as See also:minister of marine and See also:fisheries; in 1888 he became minister of See also:finance, which position he held till the defeat of his party in 1886 . A careful and even brilliant financier, and a keen debater, he became known as a strong believer in See also:protection for Canadian See also:industries and in preferential See also:trade within the See also:British See also:empire .
