Freeland is served by the Lehigh Valley railway and by electric railway to Upper Lehigh (1 m. distant, served by the Central Railroad of New See also:Jersey) and to other neighbouring places . The borough is built on Broad See also:Mountain, nearly 2000 ft. above See also:sea-level, and the See also:chief See also:industry is the See also:mining of See also:coal at the numerous surrounding collieries . Freeland is the seat of the Mining and See also:Mechanical See also:Institute of the See also:Anthracite Region, chartered in 1894, modelled after the See also:German Steigerschulen, with elementary and secondary departments and a See also:night school for workmen . The borough has foundries and See also:machine shops of considerable importance, and manufactures See also:silk, overalls, See also:beer and hames .
