GALAXY, properly the MILKY WAY, from the Greek name o yaXaEias, .sc. KuKAos, fromyaXa, milk, cf. the Lat. via lactea (see STAR). The word is more generally employed in its figurative or transferred sense, to describe a gathering of brilliant or distinguished persons or objects.
