James Geddes had a most distinguished military in India and Canada, as well as in the American Civil War as an Iowa soldier. He entered the Civil War as Captain of the 8th Iowa Volunteer Infantry in Sept. 1861 after serving with a local Benton County, Iowa, militia. James Geddes's middle name is actually spelled Loraine and is a name used by many members of the Geddes family, and sometimes also shows up as Lorraine.
